Pergolas

Aluminium & Louvre-Roof Pergolas Northampton

An aluminium pergola with a louvre roof is a different proposition to a traditional timber structure, and it tends to appeal to a different kind of customer. Rather than a fixed frame that lets dappled light through, a louvre roof is made up of rotating slats that open and close, giving you a shaded seating area one minute and something closer to full sun the next, without moving a single piece of furniture.

We install aluminium and louvre-roof pergolas for homes and commercial properties across Northampton, Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas. It's a more mechanical product than a standard pergola, so getting the installation right, particularly the levelling, drainage and motor setup, matters more here than it does with a simple fixed frame.

How a Louvre-Roof Pergola Works

The frame itself is aluminium, which keeps the structure lightweight relative to its strength and means it won't warp, rot or need repainting the way timber can over time. The roof is made up of individual louvre blades, usually running the full width of the structure, that rotate on a shared mechanism.

  • Closed, the blades sit flush against each other to shed rainwater, usually into a guttering channel built into the frame

  • Open, the blades angle to let light and air through while still providing some shade

  • Most systems are operated by a wall-mounted switch or remote control, and some can be set up with rain or wind sensors that close the roof automatically

  • Integrated LED lighting is a common add-on, run along the frame rather than fitted as a separate fixture

Because the roof is doing more than a fixed frame, the mechanism needs to be installed level and properly supported. A pergola that's slightly out of true will still look fine with a fixed roof, but a louvre system that's out of alignment can bind, let water through at the seals, or put uneven strain on the motor over time. This is one of the main reasons this product tends to sit on its own page rather than being folded into a general pergola listing, the installation itself is a genuinely different job.

Why Choose Aluminium Over Timber

Neither material is objectively better, they suit different priorities. Aluminium framed pergolas, whether louvre-roofed or fixed, need very little upkeep beyond an occasional clean, hold their finish for years without treatment, and tend to suit a cleaner, more contemporary garden or commercial space. Oak and other timber structures, covered on our main pergola installation page, give a warmer, more traditional look but need periodic treatment to stay protected against the weather.

If low maintenance and precise light control matter more to you than a traditional appearance, aluminium is usually the better fit. If you want a bespoke design that mixes materials, or a more custom feature set, our bespoke and design-led pergolas page covers that side of things in more detail.

What's Involved in Installation

  1. A site visit to check ground conditions, levels and where power will need to be run for the motor and any lighting

  2. Agreeing the frame size, finish colour and any additional features such as integrated lighting, sensors or screens

  3. Groundwork and fixing the frame, with particular attention to getting the base level given the moving parts involved

  4. Fitting and testing the louvre mechanism and any electrics, including a full run-through of the controls before we finish

  5. A final check of the drainage, seals and operation in both open and closed positions

Because the roof mechanism runs on electricity, any wiring is carried out to proper standards and, where required, certified accordingly. We'll talk you through exactly what's involved for your specific system during the initial visit.

Note

Planning Permission

The same Permitted Development rules that apply to pergolas generally, covered in full on our main pergola installation page, apply here too: height, distance from boundaries and total garden coverage are the key factors. An aluminium louvre pergola is still treated as an open garden structure under these rules in most cases, since the louvres are a roof design rather than solid enclosure, but as with any pergola project, it's worth confirming your specific situation with West Northamptonshire Council or Milton Keynes City Council if there's any doubt, particularly on a listed or conservation area property.

  • One point of contact throughout, including for any electrical work involved

  • A clear, honest quote before work starts, covering the frame, mechanism and any features you've asked for

Aluminium & Louvre-Roof Pergola FAQs

Most systems are designed to shed rainwater effectively when the blades are fully closed, usually channelling it into integrated guttering within the frame. As with any mechanical seal, performance depends on correct installation and alignment, which is why getting the base level and the frame properly supported matters.

This depends on the specific system fitted. Some have a manual override built in, others rely solely on the motor. We'll cover this as part of choosing a system during your consultation, since it's a reasonable thing to want to know before committing to a particular product.

Very little compared with timber. An occasional wash down to keep the finish clean is generally all that's needed, along with the same basic mechanical checks you'd give any motorised garden feature over time.

Yes, integrated LED lighting is a common addition, and heating can be incorporated too. It's best specified at the point of ordering the frame, since running cabling through the aluminium structure is far easier to plan in advance than to retrofit.

Warranty terms depend on the specific system and manufacturer, and we'll confirm exactly what's covered, and for how long, as part of your quote before you commit to anything.
