Veranda & Canopy Installation Northampton
If what you actually want is somewhere to sit outside that stays dry whatever the weather's doing, a veranda or canopy is usually a better fit than a pergola. Attached to the house and fully roofed rather than open or louvred, it works more like an extra room than a garden feature, and it's a project we're asked for regularly across Northampton and Milton Keynes.
We install verandas and canopies for homes and commercial properties, from a simple lean-to canopy over a back door to a larger veranda spanning the width of a house and built to be used year-round.
Veranda or Canopy, What's the Difference
The two terms get used fairly loosely, but there's a useful distinction. A canopy is generally a smaller, simpler structure, often just covering a doorway, path or small seating area, sometimes without full sides. A veranda is typically larger, spans a greater part of the house frontage, and is built with the expectation that it'll be used properly, for dining, seating or as a covered walkway, in most weather.
Canopies suit entrances, bin storage, small seating nooks or protecting a doorway from rain
Verandas suit larger seating and dining areas, connecting the garden to the house without fully enclosing it
Both are fixed to the house rather than freestanding, which is one of the main things that separates them from a pergola
Roofing can be solid (tiled, felt or polycarbonate) or glazed, depending on how much natural light you want through
If what appealed to you was more the idea of an open, shaded structure rather than a fully enclosed roof, our pergola installation page, or the aluminium and louvre-roof pergola page if you want adjustable shade, are likely a better starting point.
What's Involved in Installation
A site visit to check the wall the structure will be fixed to, drainage, and how it ties into existing guttering
Agreeing size, roofing material and any sides or glazing
Fixing the structure securely to the house, which needs proper flashing and weatherproofing at the join to avoid future leaks
Fitting guttering or drainage for the new roof so water is directed away from the house rather than pooling at the base
A final check of the fixings, seals and drainage before we finish
The join between a veranda roof and the existing house wall is the single most important detail on this kind of project. Get the flashing and weatherproofing wrong here and you're storing up a damp problem for later, which is why this isn't a job we'd recommend taking on without proper roofing experience behind it.
Note
Planning Permission for Verandas and Canopies
Because a veranda is attached to the house rather than freestanding, it's generally assessed differently under Permitted Development rules to a standalone pergola. Verandas, balconies and raised platforms are specifically excluded from Permitted Development in most cases, meaning planning permission is more likely to be required, particularly for anything raised or with a solid roof close to a boundary. A simple ground-level canopy over a doorway is usually treated more leniently, closer to a porch, but this varies by size and position.
Given how much this depends on the exact design and your specific property, we'd always check your situation with West Northamptonshire Council or Milton Keynes City Council before committing to a veranda design, and we'll flag anything in your brief that's likely to need an application as part of our initial visit.

Veranda & Canopy FAQs
It's more likely than with a freestanding pergola, since verandas and raised platforms are generally excluded from Permitted Development. We'll flag this as part of your initial design discussion and recommend checking with the local council before work starts if there's any doubt.
In most cases yes, though the fixing method and design will vary depending on the existing wall construction and roofline. We'll assess this during the site visit rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all approach will work.
Through proper flashing at the join between the new roof and the existing wall, along with guttering to direct water away cleanly. This is the detail that most affects how the structure performs over time, so it's not one we cut corners on.
Yes, a smaller canopy over an entrance, path or bin store is a common, more affordable project and is usually simpler from a planning perspective too.
Options typically include tiled, felt, polycarbonate or glazed roofing, each with a different look, cost and amount of natural light let through. We'll talk through what suits your specific project during the consultation.
