Driveway & Patio Installation Northampton

A driveway or patio takes more punishment than most surfaces around a property, vehicle weight, weather and years of use, and it only holds up if the groundwork underneath is done properly. We install driveways and patios across Northampton and Milton Keynes, in a range of materials.

Materials We Work With

  • Block paving, a versatile, durable option available in a wide range of colours and patterns

  • Tarmac, a cost-effective, hard-wearing surface well suited to larger driveways

  • Resin bound surfacing, giving a smooth, low-maintenance finish with good permeability

  • Natural stone and porcelain paving, for a premium patio finish

  • Concrete, a practical, durable base for driveways and utility areas

What Installation Involves

A weak sub-base is the most common reason driveways fail early, sinking, cracking or rutting under vehicle weight, regardless of how good the surface material looks when it's first laid. This is the detail we won't cut corners on, even though it's invisible in the finished job.

  1. Excavating to the correct depth for the chosen surface and expected use, whether pedestrian or vehicle traffic

  2. Installing a properly compacted sub-base, the single biggest factor in how long a driveway or patio lasts

  3. Laying edging or kerbs to contain the surface and prevent it spreading or sinking at the edges

  4. Laying the chosen surface material to the correct falls for drainage

  5. Jointing, sealing or compacting as appropriate to the material

Note

Drainage and Planning Considerations

In England, a new or replacement driveway over a certain area at the front of a house generally needs planning permission if it uses impermeable surfacing (such as standard tarmac or non-permeable paving) without separate provision for surface water drainage. Using permeable paving, gravel, or providing a soakaway or other drainage that keeps rainwater on your own property, can avoid this requirement in many cases. We'll advise honestly on how this applies to your specific project and confirm with West Northamptonshire Council or Milton Keynes City Council where there's any doubt.

Driveway & Patio FAQs

This depends on the size, position and surfacing material. Impermeable surfacing over a certain area at the front of a house generally needs permission unless drainage is properly addressed, while permeable options often avoid this requirement. We'll assess your specific project.

Block paving uses individual units laid in a pattern, offering a traditional appearance and the ability to repair individual blocks if damaged. Resin bound surfacing gives a smoother, seamless finish, generally requiring less ongoing maintenance but harder to patch-repair if damaged.

This depends on size and material, but most domestic driveways take one to two weeks including excavation, sub-base preparation and surfacing.

This is most commonly a sign of an inadequate sub-base failing under vehicle weight over time, rather than a problem with the surface material itself, which is why sub-base quality matters so much at installation.
